Sigmund Alfred Anderssen

Sigmund Alfred Anderssen is a Professor at the Department of Sports Medicine, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH). He holds a PhD (1996) and Master's degree (1990) from NIH, where he also served as Head of the Institute of Sports Medicine from 2011 to 2023. Anderssen has been pivotal in establishing Norway's national physical activity surveillance system through projects like ungKan1-3 (children) and Kan1-3 (adults), and co-leads the Physical Activity in Childhood Cancer Survivors Study (PACCS). He contributed to Nordic physical activity guidelines and National Professional Guidelines for Diabetes.

Research Focus: Anderssen's work spans physical activity epidemiology, cardiometabolic risk factors, diabetes prevention, and post-cancer rehabilitation. His studies leverage large cohort data and accelerometry to analyze activity patterns across life stages, with recent articles examining screen time impacts, dose-response mortality associations, and intergenerational health outcomes.

Publications & Collaborations: With over 200 publications, Anderssen collaborates with institutions like the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and international research teams. His work appears in The Lancet, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, and International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition.
