Associate Professor Sieu Khuu is a prominent researcher in the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), specializing in visual perception with emphases on cognitive and visual neuroscience. His work focuses on understanding the computational rules underlying visual information processing and how this information aids visually guided behavior.
Dr. Khuu's educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Science (Hons) from University of Western Australia (UWA), 1999
- Doctor of Philosophy from University of Western Australia (UWA), 2003
His research interests center on visual psychophysics to characterize and quantify human perception, particularly focusing on how the visual system detects and recognizes form and motion in three-dimensional environments. He investigates how local and global form and motion estimates are derived, the role of visual awareness in this process, and three-dimensional structure perception through monocular and binocular cues. A significant aspect of his work involves developing psychophysical tests for clinical assessment and diagnosis of eye diseases.
Dr. Khuu has secured substantial research funding from prestigious organizations including the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), Australian Research Council (ARC), and Research Grants Council of Hong Kong for projects related to visual neurotoxicity, glaucoma screening, and visual perception mechanisms.
His notable achievements include:
- UNSW Innovation Award Finalist (2013)
- ARC Silver Star Award (AUD $35,000, 2013)
- Multiple University of Hong Kong Research Grant Merit awards
- A patent for 'Methods and systems for diagnosis of ocular disease' (WO/2014/094035)
As an educator, Dr. Khuu serves as course coordinator for VISN2211 (Organisation and Function of the Visual System) and VISN3211 (New Development in Vision Science), teaching Optometry and Vision Science students about the psychology and neuroscience of visual perception. He supervises numerous PhD and Honours students across various research projects related to visual perception, global form and motion integration, and clinical applications of psychophysical testing.
Dr. Khuu is affiliated with the Centre for Eye Health Research Group and leads the Sensory Processes Research Laboratory, where his team investigates topics including blue light blocking lenses, surface and material perception, visual electrophysiology, and visual processing mechanisms.
