Sidney Chalhoub is the David and Peggy Rockefeller Professor of History and African and African American Studies at Harvard University, serving as Chair of the Department of History. He is a faculty affiliate in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and is on leave during 2025-2026. A renowned social historian of Brazil, his work explores 19th-century slavery, race, public health, and judicial practices.
His research integrates interdisciplinary methodologies, analyzing literature, legal records, and medical discourse to uncover marginalized voices in Brazilian history. Recent publications focus on racial violence, disease control, and the intersections of law, freedom, and labor. His critical editions of forgotten texts, such as Duarte Badaró's Fantina and Pereira Rego's History of Yellow Fever, revive underrepresented narratives.
