Sidney A. Coon is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Arizona. His research focuses on nuclear physics, particularly many-body systems, nucleon-nucleon interactions, and effective field theories (EFT). He has held prior roles as a Full Professor at New Mexico State University, a Program Officer at the National Science Foundation, and a DOE Program Officer. Coon’s work on the Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force model is foundational in modern nuclear theory.
Education: PhD in Physics (1972, University of Maryland). His research contributions include advancing understanding of few-nucleon systems and three-nucleon forces. He is supported by a DOE award for developing EFT tools to simplify the strong interaction in many-body systems.
Key honors include Fellow of the American Physical Society and seven NSF grants. His recent work applies EFT to nuclear many-body problems and related systems. Coon collaborates with Sean Fleming and Ubirajara van Kolck on the 'Effective Theories of the Strong Interaction' project.
