Sid Venkatesh serves as Assistant Professor at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) and Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington. His research bridges molecular virology, microbiome science, and nutritional interventions.
His primary research focuses on host-microbiota interactions and molecular recognition in the gut. Using germ-free animal models, human fecal isolates, and organoid systems, his lab investigates how microbial metabolites impact human physiology. Key areas include deorphanizing gut receptors, studying microbial enzyme mechanisms (particularly fatty acid amide hydrolases), and developing microbiota-directed complementary foods (MDCFs) for undernourished children and cystic fibrosis patients.
His recent publications reveal groundbreaking work on gut microbial enzymes affecting satiety pathways and microbiome restoration in malnutrition. His research demonstrates that MDCFs can repair gut microbial communities and improve growth outcomes in undernourished children through specific microbial metabolic pathways.
