Sid Brown is a Professor of Religious Studies at the University of the South (Sewanee). She holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Emory University, an M.A. and Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Florida State University and the University of Virginia, respectively. Her research focuses on Theravada Buddhism, religious environmental responses, and human-animal relationships. She has conducted fieldwork in India, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Thailand.
Her major publications include The Journey of One Buddhist Nun (2009) examining Thai Buddhist monastic life, and A Buddhist in the Classroom (2012) applying Buddhist philosophy to educational ethics. Brown received the Sewanee Teacher of the Year Award (2009) and a Mellon Foundation grant (2012) for interdisciplinary work on human-animal studies with Laura Hobgood-Oster. Her teaching emphasizes lived religious experiences and ethical pedagogy.
