Dr Sianan Healy is a Tracey Banivanua Mar Research Fellow in the History department at La Trobe University, appointed in 2020. Her research focuses on the intersection of gender, race, and class in Australian historical contexts, with particular emphasis on women's health history and Indigenous experiences. She is currently co-Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery Project 'Indigenous Mobilities to and through Australia: agency and sovereignties' (DP200103269), which runs from 2020-2025.
Dr Healy's research interests span multiple interconnected fields including Indigenous history, women's health history, gender and social history, Aboriginal education, spatial history, housing policy, infertility studies, and Indigenous mobilities. Her work employs interdisciplinary approaches to examine how structural issues of gender, race and class have impacted on women's agency, bodily autonomy and access to medical treatment, as well as how spatial arrangements and mobility patterns have shaped Indigenous experiences of assimilation policies in post-war Australia. Through historical analysis of medicalized definitions of infertility and Aboriginal housing schemes, her research reveals the political, social and cultural dimensions of experiences often reduced to purely biological or technical matters.
Analysis of Dr Healy's publication record reveals consistent engagement with spatial dimensions of Australian history, particularly examining how physical environments and mobility patterns intersect with social policies affecting marginalized communities. Her recent work shows a progression from studies of Aboriginal education and spatial assimilation in the postwar period to contemporary investigations of women's experiences with infertility, demonstrating her ability to apply spatial and historical methodologies across different subject areas while maintaining focus on power relations and structural inequalities.
Dr Healy actively supervises Masters and PhD students in history and related disciplines. She has secured significant research funding, most notably as co-Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery Project 'Indigenous Mobilities to and through Australia: agency and sovereignties' (2020-2025), which continues her earlier work on Indigenous experiences of assimilation, education and housing that she conducted during her postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for the Study of the Inland (2017-2018).
