Shuo Chen

Shuo Chen, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). His roles include Director of Biostatistics and Data Science at the Institute of Health Computing and Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, UMSOM, and Graduate Director of the PhD in Biostatistics and Medical Data Science program. He is also affiliated with the Applied Mathematics & Statistics and Scientific Computation (AMSC) program at the University of Maryland, College Park, and the School of Public Health. Dr. Chen’s research focuses on statistical methodologies for complex biomedical data, including neuroimaging, genomics, and multi-omics, with applications in clinical trials, environmental health, and precision medicine.

His academic background includes a PhD in Biostatistics from Emory University, an M.S. in Mathematics and Statistics from East Tennessee State University, and a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology. He has published extensively in top-tier journals, with a focus on machine learning, network analysis, and spatiotemporal modeling. Dr. Chen has received the MPower Professor title, recognizing his contributions to biostatistics and bioinformatics.

Current research interests span statistical methods for high-dimensional data, neuroimaging analysis, and translational applications in mental health and aging. His lab, UMDBright, develops tools for data-driven discovery in biomedicine.

Key collaborations include work on schizophrenia, cardiovascular risk, and white matter aging, leveraging large datasets from the ABCD study and UK Biobank. His grants and awards support training the next generation of data scientists, with notable alumni placements in academia and industry.
