Professor Shubha Sathyendranath MBE is a distinguished Remote Sensing Scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory with over 40 years of expertise in marine optics and ocean colour remote sensing. She chairs the International Ocean Colour Coordinating Group and serves as Science Lead for the European Space Agency's Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative while contributing as IPCC Lead Author for climate assessments.
Her research pioneers the integration of ocean colour data across marine ecology and public health domains. Core work examines phytoplankton bio-optical properties, primary production dynamics, and biological-physical feedbacks, while groundbreaking extensions model water-borne pathogen ecology (Vibrio cholerae, E. coli) using remote sensing proxies developed through India-Brazil collaborations.
Professor Sathyendranath's exceptional contributions have earned global recognition through top marine science honors and national distinctions.
- Grande Médaille Albert 1er of Monaco
- A.G. Huntsman Award for Excellence in Marine Sciences
- UNESCO/IOC Pannikkar Memorial Medal for capacity building
- Chevalier of Monaco's Order of Cultural Merit (2022)
- Member of the British Empire (MBE, 2023)
She directs major ESA-funded projects including Primary Production Parameters from Space while advancing climate applications through IPCC involvement. Her infectious disease research leverages multinational partnerships to translate remote sensing into public health tools, demonstrating exceptional commitment to global scientific capacity building through UNESCO/IOC initiatives and institutional advisory roles.
