معرفی
Shu-Cherng Fang is the Walter Clark Chair Professor and University Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University's College of Engineering. He has been a faculty member since 1988 and maintains an active research program in optimization, fuzzy systems, and logistics. He holds honorary professorships at Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Northeast University, Shanghai University, National Chiao Tung University, and National Tsinghua University.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences, Northwestern University (1979)
- M.S. in Mathematics, Johns Hopkins University (1977)
- B.S. in Mathematics, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan (1974)
Dr. Fang’s research focuses on operations research, industrial engineering, and applied optimization. His work spans linear and nonlinear programming, fuzzy optimization, soft computing, logistics, supply chain management, and support vector machines. He has made significant contributions to entropy optimization, L1 splines, and fourth-party logistics network design. His recent publications emphasize robust and distributionally robust optimization models for logistics and machine learning applications.
The most recent publications reveal a strong focus on fourth-party logistics network design under uncertainty, robust support vector machines, and portfolio optimization with cardinality constraints. His work integrates advanced optimization techniques with real-world applications in supply chains, finance, and data science.

Dr. Fang has advised numerous PhD and master’s students, many of whom have become academics and industry leaders. His former students established the Shu-Cherng Fang ISE Graduate Student Endowment in his honor. He has received continuous research funding and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making, while also serving on the editorial boards of over 15 journals. His research group, known as the Fangroup, fosters a collaborative and holistic approach to academic and personal development.
Dr. Fang leads a vibrant research lab focused on optimization and decision-making under uncertainty. His team includes PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working on logistics, machine learning, and supply chain models. The group emphasizes both theoretical rigor and practical applicability.
