Dr. Shruti Philips is a Doctoral Lecturer and Rocks and Minerals Coordinator at Hunter College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY). She serves as the MA TEP Earth Science Advisor and has over 25 years of teaching experience across multiple institutions, including Hunter College, Queens College, Brooklyn College, and Pace University. Her research focuses on geological studies, including the diagenetic history of limestones and metamorphic rocks, and she has developed innovative online geology lab curricula during the pandemic.
Education: Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from CUNY Graduate School (1999), M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Poona, India (1989 and 1987).
Research Interests: Marine geology, paleoceanography, and long-term climate change. She aims to develop advanced courses exploring Earth’s co-evolution with life and paleoclimate reconstruction using proxies like sediments and ice cores. Her work emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches to address present climate challenges.
Teaching Contributions: Courses include Physical Geology, Oceanography, Environmental Science, and Earth System Science. She digitized the department’s rock and mineral collection into 3D virtual models and created online labs via Geology at Hunter, supporting hybrid and remote learning.
