Shourish Chakravarty is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at Virginia Tech, affiliated with the Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center (AREC). His research focuses on applying economic tools to analyze agricultural productivity, technology adoption, and sustainability challenges, particularly for plant commodity producers in Virginia and beyond.
Dr. Chakravarty holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Florida's Food and Resource Economics Department. His work emphasizes stakeholder engagement to address real-world agricultural issues, including crop profitability, conservation practices, and emerging threats like tropical deforestation and plant disease outbreaks.
His research has explored topics such as the economic impacts of cover crops in citrus production, antibiotic use in plant agriculture, and the implications of biofuel policies on land use. He also investigates the intersection of environmental science and policy, such as carbon credit markets and deforestation's effects on water quality.
Key publications highlight his contributions to understanding Huanglongbing (HLB) management, cover crop adoption barriers, and the economic feasibility of irrigation subsidies for smallholder farmers.
