Shou Ping Liu

Shou Ping Liu is an Assistant Professor of Music at Connecticut College, where she joined in 2023 and directs both the Connecticut College Orchestra and Connecticut College Singers. Her leadership extends to ensemble tours, including a historic Carnegie Hall performance with Union College ensembles prior to her current appointment.

Her educational foundation includes:

• Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Conducting from the University of Southern California
• Master of Music from Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin
• Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory

Liu specializes in cross-genre conducting with research emphases on orchestral repertoire, opera production, choral traditions, pedagogical piano instruction, and music's relationship to historical trauma—particularly the Holocaust's impact on 20th-century composition. Her artistic practice integrates performance with sociohistorical contextualization.

As an active conductor, Liu has led major ensembles including Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin, South Denmark Philharmonic, and George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra. She participates in elite training forums such as Marin Alsop's Peabody Conducting Institute and masterclasses with Sir Donald Runnicles.

Liu advises student musicians through her directorship of college ensembles while maintaining professional performance commitments. Her prior roles include Music Director of Santa Monica Youth Orchestra, Assistant Conductor for Arizona's Lyric Opera Theatre, and Union College's Director of Performance.
