Shondel Nero is a Professor of Language Education at New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Specializing in applied linguistics, her research focuses on language education policies, Caribbean Creole English, and culturally responsive pedagogy. She directs a study-abroad program in the Dominican Republic to enhance teachers' intercultural competence. Dr. Nero has authored four books and numerous peer-reviewed articles, earning awards such as the James E. Alatis Prize (2016) and the Distinguished Guyanese Linguist Award (2024). She served on the Board of Trustees of the Center for Applied Linguistics and as Associate Editor of TESOL Journal.
Her research examines linguistic diversity, particularly for speakers of vernacular Englishes and Creoles, addressing identity, policy, and educational equity. Recent work explores climate skepticism narratives and transnational language practices. Nero’s interdisciplinary approach bridges sociolinguistics, education, and policy, with a focus on marginalized communities in the Caribbean and diaspora contexts.
Selected honors include the AAAL Book Award (2022) for The Power of Narrative and NYU’s Daniel E. Griffiths Research Award (2021). Her grants and collaborations emphasize global education initiatives and teacher training programs. She actively engages in public discourse on language diversity through talks and media interviews.
