Shiwei Chen is a Professor of History and Chair of the History Department at Lake Forest College. He specializes in Modern Chinese and East Asian History, with a focus on diplomatic strategies, intellectual movements, and institutional development. His research often intersects with themes of modernization, state-building, and transnational collaboration.
Education includes a PhD in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University (1998), an MA from Peking University (1985), and a BA from Yunnan University (1982). He has held visiting positions at institutions like East China Normal University, Peking University, and Chuo University in Japan.
Research interests span the Cultural Revolution, Sino-American diplomatic history, and the role of academia in shaping political narratives. His recent work includes studies on Kang Youwei’s philosophical influence and the intellectual foundations of modern Chinese diplomacy.
Over 20 publications and 50 invited lectures globally highlight his contributions to fields like Cold War history, Korean War controversies, and the history of scientific institutions in China. Awards include the Chunhui Scholarship (2013–2018) and grants from the Toyota Foundation and Harvard University.
Engaged in academic leadership, Chen has advised grants on higher education trends and led initiatives to enhance international collaboration in private universities. He is an active member of professional organizations, including the American Historical Association and ASIANetwork.
