Shirley Yap is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at California State University, East Bay. Her research focuses on differential geometry, Euclidean geometry, differential equations, and computational geometry. She is also deeply involved in machine learning and computation, with expertise in Python, Fortran, C++, and open-source tools like SAGE.
Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in mathematical physics and curvature problems in fiber bundles over nilpotent/solvable groups.
Teaching & Mentorship: Has taught 21 undergraduate/graduate courses including Calculus, Real Analysis, Topology, and Differential Geometry. Founded CSUEB's first student chapter of the American Women in Mathematics, mentoring numerous students who have pursued or earned PhDs. Currently a Governor of the Mathematical Association of America, representing Northern California, Nevada, and Hawaii.
Community Engagement: Co-founder of the East Bay Math Teachers' Circle, revitalizing K-12 educators' enthusiasm for mathematics through problem-solving workshops. Advocate for open-source resources in education, promoting Python, SAGE, and open textbooks to address rising educational costs.
Labs/Initiatives: Leads efforts in computational mathematics and gender equity in STEM through her academic and organizational roles.
