Shirley Wyver is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Research Training at the Macquarie School of Education, Macquarie University. She holds a PhD in developmental psychology and is a registered psychologist. Her research focuses on outdoor play and learning, early vision impairment/blindness, and early bilingualism. She leads the Sydney Playground Project, investigating physical and social outcomes of outdoor play interventions in children.
Wyver’s academic roles include editorial board memberships for Asia-Pacific Journal of Research in Early Childhood Education and International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, and she serves on the Executive Board of the Pacific Early Childhood Education Research Association.
Her research interests emphasize child development within educational contexts, with particular attention to inclusive play environments and health outcomes. Key projects include studies on pandemic impacts on outdoor activity access in childcare settings and bilingual education evidence gaps. She has received the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH) 2019 Outstanding Reviewer Award.
Wyver collaborates on interdisciplinary projects addressing urban environments, risk-taking in play, and health equity. Her work spans policy consultations, such as contributions to Australia’s National Guidelines for early childhood health checks. She has supervised research on outdoor play interventions and child health record utilization, with publications in developmental psychology, education, and public health journals.
