Shineng Hu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. Holding a Ph.D. from Yale University (2018) and a B.S. from Peking University (2012), he leads the Hu Climate Dynamics Lab, combining observations, theory, and climate modeling to study ocean-atmosphere interactions across timescales.
- Research Focus: El Niño dynamics, global warming patterns, paleoclimate studies, and ocean heat transport mechanisms
- Teaching: Courses on climate dynamics, ocean-atmosphere interactions, and climate science data analysis
- Collaborations: Active in international climate research networks
Recent work examines ENSO dynamics, marine heatwaves, and elevation-dependent warming mechanisms. The lab investigates historical climate patterns and develops interpretable climate models, with emphasis on ocean circulation's role in climate change.
Publications span high-impact journals including Nature Climate Change, Geophysical Research Letters, and Climate Dynamics, covering topics from satellite-based atmospheric river detection to climate impacts of the North Atlantic warming hole.
Career highlights include contributions to understanding the 2015-2016 extreme El Niño event and the global warming hiatus phenomenon. Current projects involve deep-time climate analysis and climate model development.
