Shin Hayashi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Mathematics at Aoyama Gakuin University's College of Science and Engineering. Previously, he held positions as an Assistant Professor at Tohoku University's Advanced Institute for Materials Research (2021-2023) and as a PRESTO Researcher at the Japan Science and Technology Agency (2019-2023).
Dr. Hayashi received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 2017 under the supervision of Professor Mikio Furuta, following his Master's degree (2013) and Bachelor's degree (2011) from the same institution. His educational background also includes attendance at Nanao High School in Ishikawa Prefecture (2004-2007).
Hayashi's research focuses on the intersection of mathematics and physics, particularly applying index theory and K-theory to understand topological phases of matter and topological insulators. His work bridges abstract mathematical concepts with concrete physical phenomena, especially in the study of corner states and bulk-edge correspondence in topological materials.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on topological invariants, corner states, and mathematical approaches to topological phases. The articles demonstrate a progression from foundational work on bulk-edge correspondence to more specialized investigations of corner states in higher-dimensional systems.

Hayashi has been actively involved in numerous research projects, including principal investigator roles for Grant-in-Aid for Early-Career Scientists projects from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, focusing on geometric studies of topological invariants and mathematical studies of topologies for higher-order topological insulators. He has also participated in the PRESTO program of the Japan Science and Technology Agency.
His professional activities include membership in The Mathematical Society of Japan and organization of academic events such as the 49th Topology Fresher's Seminar. He has also engaged in public outreach through lectures at citizen groups like NothJP.
