Shifaan Thowfeequ serves as a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist within the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (DPAG) at the University of Oxford, actively contributing to the Srinivas Group's research on embryonic development and genetic regulation.
His academic foundation includes:
- Natural Sciences undergraduate degree from Durham University
- MRes qualification from the University of Bath
- Doctoral research under Professors Jonathan Slack and David Tosh focusing on liver-to-beta-cell reprogramming
Thowfeequ's research integrates developmental biology with genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, specifically investigating how transcription factor networks govern early embryonic processes and their implications for congenital disorders and evolutionary adaptation. His methodology combines molecular analysis of cellular processes in post-implantation embryos with cross-species comparative studies to identify conserved regulatory pathways.
Within the Srinivas Group, he maintains dual focus on fundamental mechanisms of genetic regulation and translational applications for regenerative medicine. His collaborative work extends to prior research phases including Xenopus tail regeneration studies at Bath and mammalian kidney development investigations during his Columbia University tenure with Professor Frank Costantini. Thowfeequ also actively participates in science communication initiatives to advance public understanding of developmental biology.
