Sherry Johnson serves as Associate Professor in the Department of English at Grand Valley State University, teaching courses including African American Literature, Multicultural American Literature, and Neo-Slave Narratives.

Her research centers on Black women's writing across North America, examining intersections of memory, identity, and resistance through African American visual culture and digital humanities frameworks. Current projects explore transnational Black literary networks between Canada and the United States.
Recent publications (2022-2025) reveal consistent scholarly engagement with African American literary traditions, particularly Black women's narratives and cultural spaces. Key themes include self-care practices in Black women's salons, critical reinterpretations of canonical works like Invisible Man, and foundational scholarship on nineteenth-century African American literature.
