Sherif Emil is a Professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and serves as an Investigator at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) at the Glen site within the Child Health and Human Development Program. He leads the Harvey E. Beardmore Division of Pediatric Surgery at the MUHC and holds the Lina and Mirella Saputo Foundation Chair in Pediatric Surgical Education and Patient and Family-Centered Care.
Dr. Emil's research focuses on pediatric surgery clinical outcomes with emphasis on improving practice to benefit children and optimize healthcare resources. His specific interests include congenital surgical anomalies, appendicitis, abdominal wall hernias, and chest wall anomalies. He is particularly interested in patient-centered care approaches in pediatric surgery, including patient-reported outcomes (PROPS), shared decision-making, and the impact of surgical illness on family units.
Dr. Emil founded the Canadian Consortium for Research in Pediatric Surgery (CanCORPS) in 2018, which serves as the primary vehicle for his research activities. He also has a strong commitment to globalizing surgical education, leading initiatives to increase surgical capacity in low- and middle-income countries through education, mentoring, and clinical services.
Dr. Emil's work demonstrates a consistent trend toward evidence-based practice in pediatric surgery, with recent publications focusing on multicenter collaborative research, standardized care pathways, and innovative approaches to common pediatric surgical conditions. His research spans both clinical outcomes and quality improvement initiatives with practical implications for everyday surgical practice.
Dr. Emil has received recognition for his leadership in establishing CanCORPS and advancing collaborative research in pediatric surgery. His work has contributed significantly to the development of national research infrastructure for pediatric surgical subspecialties in Canada.
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Emil has supervised numerous trainees and collaborated extensively with colleagues across Canada and internationally. His global surgical education initiatives have impacted surgical training and capacity building in multiple countries.
Dr. Emil leads several research teams through CanCORPS and collaborates with various laboratories and clinical teams focused on pediatric surgical outcomes, quality improvement, and global surgical education. His future work appears to be focused on expanding the reach of evidence-based pediatric surgical care both nationally and internationally.
