Sheran Mahatme

Sheran Mahatme, DO, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and serves as Chief of Infectious Diseases, HIV Lead Physician, and Associate Chief of Staff for Community Care at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. She holds leadership roles in the Veterans Health Administration, including VISN12 Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Physician Lead and Co-Infectious Diseases Lead. Her clinical and research focus includes HIV care/prevention, sexually transmitted infections, and antimicrobial stewardship. Dr. Mahatme completed her Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh (2005), after Internal Medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital and internship at Genesys Regional Medical Center. She earned her DO from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (1998) and MPH from the University of Pittsburgh (1994).

Her research emphasizes patient outcomes in infectious disease management, particularly among veterans. Notable projects include studies on SARS-CoV-2 outcomes in hospitalized veterans, drug interactions in antiretroviral therapy, and antibiotic prescribing practices. Dr. Mahatme actively contributes to public health initiatives and medical education through her academic and administrative roles.

Professional activities include board certification in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, and leadership in VA healthcare programs addressing community care and antimicrobial use optimization.
