Shengyun Gu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cognitive Science at Occidental College (Oxy). Her research focuses on language structure (phonology, morphology, phonetics, prosody), sign language linguistics, and language acquisition, particularly in bilingualism and second language accents. She investigates relationships between language and cognition, and engages in language documentation through studies of Shanghai Sign Language and American Sign Language (ASL).

Her research interests also include first language phonological development, second language accents, and bimodal bilingualism. Prior to Oxy, she was a postdoctoral research associate in the Sign Linguistics & Language Acquisition Lab at UConn, supervised by Diane Lillo-Martin. Her doctoral work examined bimanual coordination in Shanghai Sign Language.
Dr. Gu's work bridges linguistic theory with empirical studies of signed languages, contributing to broader understanding of human language systems.
