Dr. Sheng Dai holds dual appointments as a Corporate Fellow and Section Head overseeing four research groups in separations and polymer chemistry at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Chemical Sciences Division, and as a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. With a career spanning over three decades since joining ORNL as a postdoc in 1990, Dr. Dai has established himself as a leading researcher in ionic liquids, porous materials, and their applications for separation sciences and energy storage.
Dr. Dai's research program focuses on the development and application of advanced materials, particularly ionic liquids and porous materials, for critical challenges in separation science and energy storage. His work spans from fundamental studies of material structures to practical applications in battery technology, plastic upcycling, and carbon dioxide utilization. The breadth of his research is evident in his recent publications covering topics from molten salt chemistry to covalent organic frameworks and high-entropy oxide materials.
Dr. Dai's scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards including the US DOE Distinguished Scientist Fellow (2022), the Max Bredig Award for Ionic Liquids and Molten Salts (2020), the ACS Award in Separation Science and Technology (2019), and the IMMA Award from the International Mesostructured Materials Association (2018). He has also received the Battelle Distinguished Inventor Award (2016) and six R&D100 Awards, and is a Fellow of both the Materials Research Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
