Shelley Clark is a James McGill Professor of Sociology at McGill University, affiliated with the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Arts. She holds a PhD from Princeton University (1999) and has held positions at the Population Council and the University of Chicago before joining McGill in 2006. She directed the Centre on Population Dynamics from 2012. Her research focuses on social demography, family dynamics, rural/urban inequalities, child wellbeing, adolescent transitions, and life course methods. She has conducted extensive studies in sub-Saharan Africa, examining HIV/AIDS impacts, single motherhood, and rural-urban disparities in North America. Recent work explores rural America’s socioeconomic challenges.
Her research grants include SSHRC Insight Grant (2019–2024) on rural-urban inequalities and an IDRC-funded project on childcare in Nairobi slums. She teaches courses like SOC 355 (Rural Life in Global Society) and SOC 545 (Sociology of Population). Her findings have influenced policy at WHO, World Bank, and UN. She is currently on sabbatical.
