Dr Shelini Surendran is an Associate Professor in Biosciences and Associate Dean (International) at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (FHMS), University of Surrey. She leads the Global Graduate Award in Entrepreneurship and co-chairs the UKSAEI (UK Singapore Alliance for Entrepreneurship and Innovation). Previously, she served as Programme Director for the Foundation Year in Biosciences and former Head of Biology at Farnborough College of Technology. Her academic qualifications include a BSc, PhD, PGCE, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
Her research focuses on nutrigenetics, investigating genetic links between vitamin B12 status, cardio-metabolic traits, and personalized nutrition. She has led international studies in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Turkey, and India. As an editorial board member for journals like Frontiers in Nutrigenomics and Journal of Global Nutrition, she contributes to advancing global academic discourse. She also provides consulting services to Three Spirit Ltd, a non-alcoholic beverage company.
Dr Surendran is dedicated to innovative teaching methods, including using Play-Doh for anatomy visualization and online comic strips to enhance learning. She supervises collaborative international projects, such as the COIL initiative with CEU Universidad San Pablo in Madrid. Her work bridges education, research, and industry, emphasizing global partnerships and student employability.
Her scientific contributions include pioneering the first nutrigenetics study in Sri Lanka and developing interventions for diabetes management (e.g., Td2Ast project). She is actively involved in adapting behavioral change tools like the ABACUS-Es scale for Spanish populations and exploring psychobiotics through fermented foods.
