Shekar N Kurpad

Dr. Shekar N. Kurpad is a tenured Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and holds leadership roles as Senior Associate Dean for Neuroscience and Founding Director of the Wisconsin Institute of Neuroscience (WINS). He is a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in spinal and cranial disorders.

Dr. Kurpad’s research focuses on spinal cord injury and imaging biomarkers, with over $6 million in extramural funding from the VA, NIH, and foundations. His laboratory at MCW collaborates internationally on stem cell therapies and MRI techniques. His publications emphasize clinical guidelines, spinal imaging, and translational research.

Scientific awards include the Van Wagenen Fellowship and the Distinguished E. Harry Botterell Professorship. He serves on editorial boards and study sections for the VA Research Service, and holds leadership roles in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) and AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma.
