Dr. Sheila A. Alexander is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Acute and Tertiary Care at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Holding a PhD and RN credentials, she is also a Fellow in the Critical Care Medicine (FCCM). Her academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to the field of nursing science, particularly in genetic and genomic markers of acute brain illness and injury.
Dr. Alexander's research trajectory has focused on identifying genetic, proteomic, and other markers of brain recovery in critically ill patients. Her pioneering work demonstrated that patients with the Apolipoprotein E 4 allele experience slower recovery from severe Traumatic Brain Injury. She has since made significant advancements in understanding the brain's response to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and ICU delirium across acute and long-term phases. Her research was the first to establish sustained inflammatory markers as biomarkers of ICU delirium. Her scholarly work encompasses genetics, genomics, and neurologic disease, with numerous publications and editorial contributions including the first American Association of Neuroscience Nurses Clinical Practice Guideline for Care of the Patient with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and the book "Evidence-Based Nursing Care for Stroke and Neurovascular Conditions".
Analysis of Dr. Alexander's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on genetic markers in neurological conditions, particularly examining how genetic variations influence outcomes in traumatic brain injury, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, and delirium. Her work bridges basic science with clinical applications, investigating both molecular mechanisms and practical interventions. The research demonstrates increasing sophistication in genomic analysis techniques and a growing emphasis on translational applications that can directly impact patient care in critical care settings.
- Fellow in the Academy for Critical Care Medicine
- Pennsylvania Nightingale Award for Nursing Research
- International Society for Genetics Founders Award for Excellence in Nursing Research
- Deans Distinguished Teaching award (2011)
- International Society of Nurses in Genetics Founders Award for Excellence in Education (2012)
Dr. Alexander serves as faculty for the Pitt School of Nursing T32 Training grant in genetics and genomics, mentoring doctoral students who have tested interventions to improve outcomes after severe traumatic brain injury in human and animal models. Her service extends to multiple professional societies where she holds leadership positions including the governing Council of the Society for Critical Care Medicine, where she co-chairs the Strategy Planning Committee and serves on the CEO Search Taskforce. She is actively involved with the International Society of Nurses in Genetics as a past-president and serves on the Congress Planning Committee. Additional service includes membership on the Neurocritical Care Society Neuroprognostication Guideline workgroup, grant reviewer for the Veterans Administration Neurobiology C panel, Department of Defense, and National Institutes of Health, and editorial board membership for Critical Care Medicine, Biologic Research in Nursing, and the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing.
Dr. Alexander maintains active research collaborations across multiple institutions and disciplines, working with researchers in neurology, neurosurgery, and genetics to advance understanding of neurological outcomes following critical illness and injury. Her work integrates laboratory science with clinical observation to develop biomarkers that can predict patient outcomes and guide personalized interventions in critical care settings.
