Sheikh Alif

Dr Sheikh Alif is a Sessional Lecturer in the Teaching & Learning division and an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Chronic Disease & Ageing unit at Monash University's School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. He holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health from the University of Melbourne (2018) and an MPH in Epidemiology from North South University (2011), alongside a BDS in Dentistry from Bangladesh Dental College (2008). His research focuses on occupational health, particularly respiratory and cardiovascular epidemiology, aiming to mitigate workplace exposure risks through early screening and prevention strategies.

Alif has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles and led pivotal studies like the SafeWork Australia review on occupational lung diseases (2006–2019). In 2018, he received the prestigious FASIC Rod Rickards Fellowship, enabling collaboration with INSERM in France. He actively contributes to global initiatives like the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study, European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS), and Tasmanian Longitudinal Health Study (TAHS).

Alif’s teaching spans courses such as Epidemiology of Chronic Diseases (MPH5314), Occupational Health and Safety (MPH5309), and Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He advises the Australian Healthcare Associates on national dust disease registries and serves on editorial boards for journals like International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and Frontiers in Public Health.

Recent research highlights include forecasting disease burdens under varying smoking prevalence scenarios (The Lancet Public Health, 2024) and analyzing global diarrhoeal disease trends (The Lancet Infectious Diseases, 2025). His work intersects occupational health, public health policy, and global disease surveillance, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based interventions.
