Shayne Sloggett is the Experimental Officer in Psycholinguistics at the University of York since 2019. His roles include advanced psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics teaching, experimental methods research, and collaborative projects with faculty across multiple institutions. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2017) and a BA in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Cruz (2011). His research focuses on sentence processing, syntax, and the interplay between grammatical knowledge and comprehension mechanisms, utilizing eye-tracking, corpus linguistics, and formal acceptability tasks. Key collaborations include work with Drs. Brian Dillon, Lyn Frazier, Masaya Yoshida, and Klinton Bicknell on topics like filler-gap dependencies and predictive processing in agreement dependencies.
Shayne’s research explores how syntactic structures influence real-time language processing, particularly in pronominal reference and animacy effects. He has presented at major conferences such as CUNY, AMLaP, and NELS, focusing on themes like reflexive comprehension, predictive attention allocation, and quantification in NPIs. His work bridges theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistic experimentation, aiming to refine models of syntactic processing through empirical evidence.
Shayne has held roles including Postdoctoral Researcher at Northwestern University (2017–2019), Cognitive Neuroscience Lab Manager at the University of Maryland (2010–2011), and maintained active external engagement through invited talks at MIT and UC Santa Cruz. His research methodologies emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, integrating cognitive neuroscience insights with syntactic theory.
