Shayla Thiel-Stern is a Teaching Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota's Hubbard School of Journalism & Mass Communication. She holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Iowa and an M.A. in Communication, Culture & Technology from Georgetown University.
Her research examines media representation of gender and youth cultures, particularly analyzing historical and contemporary intersections of girlhood, social media, and digital marketing. Publications explore media literacy, cultural memory, and feminist critiques of online identity performance.
