Dr. Shawn T. Dash is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Hampton University (HU), part of the School of Science. His expertise spans Entomology, Biodiversity, Conservation Biology, and Science Education. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Texas at El Paso (2011), an M.Sc. in Entomology from Louisiana State University (2004), and a B.Sc. in Entomology and Wildlife Conservation from the University of Delaware (2002).
Research Interests: Dr. Dash focuses on ant ecology and systematics, biodiversity, and STEM education. His lab explores topics like bird ecology using large datasets, insect biodiversity, and microplastics in the Hampton River. He emphasizes undergraduate mentorship and has contributed to initiatives like Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CURE).
Awards: He has received multiple teaching awards, including the TRIO Student Support Services Favorite Professor Award (2016–2019) and the Hampton University Innovative Teaching Award (2016).
Teaching: He has taught over 20 courses at HU, including Conservation Biology, Medical Entomology, and Chesapeake Bay Biodiversity. Previously, he held positions at El Paso Community College and the University of Texas.
