Dr. Shawn S. Donkin is a Professor of Animal and Rangeland Sciences, Associate Dean of Research in the College of Agricultural Research, and Associate Director of the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon State University. He earned a BSc in Agricultural Sciences from McGill University, an MS in Dairy and Animal Science from The Pennsylvania State University, and a PhD in Dairy Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Previously, he spent 26 years as a faculty member and 10 years in leadership roles at Purdue University before joining Oregon State in 2021.
Dr. Donkin is internationally recognized for his research in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism, focusing on food animal production, animal well-being, and human health. His work spans applied and basic research, addressing optimal health and feeding strategies in transition and lactating dairy cattle, as well as energy and nutrient metabolism in mammalian liver during health and metabolic disease. His recent publications highlight advancements in vitamin D's role in cancer cell metabolism, precision animal agriculture technologies, and bovine metabolic pathways.
Dr. Donkin has authored over 110 peer-reviewed publications, attracted more than $19 million in research funding, and contributed to understanding metabolic flux, circadian rhythms in dairy cows, and nutritional interventions for livestock. His leadership roles in academic administration and research reflect a commitment to advancing agricultural sciences through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative methodologies.
