Shawn Russell is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Mechanical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Virginia. He directs the Motion Analysis and Motor Performance Laboratory, focusing on motion analysis and computational modeling of human movement.
His research explores how neuromusculoskeletal pathologies affect movement quality, coordination, and stability. Projects include intelligent control of powered walkers for cerebral palsy patients, preclinical models for volumetric muscle loss (VML) injuries, and biomechanical studies on ankle mobility post-arthroplasty. He also investigates gait recovery after cervical spine surgery and muscle compensation strategies in femur nailing.
