Shawn Goodman, PhD, CCC-A is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies/Director of PhD Studies in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at the University of Iowa. His research integrates auditory physiology, neuroscience, and acoustics with clinical audiology, focusing on cochlear mechanics and otoacoustic emissions. Key areas include medial olivocochlear reflex modulation, cochlear amplification mechanisms, and endolymphatic hydrops detection. He developed the Auditory Research Lab audio software (ARLas), widely used for multi-channel physiological measurements in auditory research.
Research emphasizes translating preclinical findings (animal models) to clinical applications for hearing disorders. Major contributions include innovations in otoacoustic emissions measurement techniques and insights into cochlear synapse loss in endolymphatic hydrops. His work bridges basic science and clinical practice, enhancing diagnostic tools and understanding of hearing mechanisms.
Recent publications (2021-2025) highlight advancements in auditory nerve function assessment, middle ear reflex dynamics, and genetic risk factors for hearing deficits. He teaches courses in signal theory, audiology instrumentation, and evidence-based practice. His lab collaborates on projects involving cochlear implantation effects, noise-induced hearing loss, and audiological innovations.
