Shawn Carlyle is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Anthropology Department at the University of Utah, where he has held a faculty position since July 2004. His research bridges anthropology, archaeology, genetics, and ecology, focusing on ancient DNA analysis, isotopic studies of prehistoric diets, and population genetics in the American Southwest and Great Basin regions.
- Education:
- BS in Anthropology (University of Utah, 1990)
- BA in History (University of Utah, 2000)
- PhD in Anthropology (University of Utah, 2003)
Carlyle's scholarly work has revolutionized understanding of prehistoric population dynamics through mitochondrial DNA studies and stable isotope analysis. His publications examine genetic continuity in Native North American populations, the role of migration versus diffusion in Southwest maize agriculture, and molecular techniques for analyzing archaeological remains. His teaching portfolio includes courses like N. American Ethnography, Race and Culture, and Human Biology, reflecting his interdisciplinary expertise. Carlyle’s research frequently addresses long-term population affiliations, regional genetic structures, and the impact of European colonization on genetic diversity.
