Shawn Bubel is a Professor and Co-Chair of the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Lethbridge. He specializes in geoarchaeology, site formation processes, and artifact analysis, with expertise in lithic and faunal studies, Near Eastern archaeology, and Plains archaeology. His current field projects include work at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Fincastle Bison Kill Site, Fort Vermilion (Alberta fur trade), and Tel Beth-Shemesh (Israel).
- PhD in Archaeology from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium (2002)
His research focuses on postdepositional processes, human evolution, and archaeological methodology. He has conducted fieldwork in Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Poland, Belgium, and Canada. His experimental studies on bioturbation and root growth effects on artifact displacement are foundational to understanding site integrity.
Shawn teaches both classroom-based courses and field schools, emphasizing hands-on research training. He has secured multiple grants from SSHRC, CURA, and the University of Lethbridge for projects related to Blackfoot Confederacy heritage preservation and experimental geoarchaeology.
