Shawkat Hussain

Dr. Shawkat Hussain serves as the Associate Director of Bioprocess and Analytical Development (BiPAD) at the Jenner Institute, University of Oxford, a position he assumed in January 2025. In this role, he leads the Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC) development and technology transfer for biologics and vaccines, including those targeting Epstein-Barr Virus and Junin.

His educational journey includes:

• PhD in Biochemical Engineering from University College London (UCL)

With over three years of experience in the BiPAD group, Shawkat previously held the position of Senior Scientist. His research expertise spans bioprocessing, downstream processing (DSP) of monoclonal antibodies and other biologics, and the development of streamlined regulatory pathways for Phase 1 vaccine trials. He is particularly passionate about reducing manufacturing costs to enhance global vaccine accessibility.

As a key leader in the BiPAD core facility, Shawkat manages staff, budgets, and collaborative projects with internal and external partners, fostering a strategic and innovative environment that supports the translation of vaccine candidates from research to clinical application.
