Shawan Showdhury

Shawan Showdhury is a Postdoctoral Research Associate with the Ecosystem Services research group at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU), Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, and German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. His work focuses on insect migration, conservation, and citizen science, with particular expertise in analyzing large biodiversity datasets and developing conservation strategies.

Dr. Showdhury's research interests span several critical areas in contemporary ecology and conservation science. He has made significant contributions to understanding insect migration patterns, demonstrating that hundreds of butterfly species migrate across vast distances, with migration concentrated in the tropics. His work has also revealed that 76% of insect species are inadequately covered by protected areas, highlighting critical gaps in global conservation efforts. As part of the sMon project, he combines and analyzes German biodiversity data to identify changes in biodiversity status across Germany, working closely with data providers and nature conservation societies. His expertise in big data analysis, geospatial methods, evidence synthesis, and quantitative ecological modeling enables innovative approaches to biodiversity monitoring.
