Shaw H. Chen is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Rochester and Director of the Center of Advanced Materials for Photonics and Lasers. His research program develops organic optoelectronic materials, particularly glassy liquid crystals and mesomorphic ceramics, for advanced optical applications.
His group designs monodisperse conjugated systems that preserve molecular order in glassy states, enabling devices including nonabsorbing polarizers, notch filters, polarized electroluminescence systems, and robust photoalignment films. Current research explores cholesteric glassy liquid crystals for night-vision technology, mesomorphic ceramic films for high-power laser polarization control, geometric surfactancy concepts, and sustainable materials processing.
Professor Chen previously served as Department Chair (2000-2009) and received the University of Rochester's Lifetime Achievement Award (2007). His publications demonstrate consistent focus on liquid crystal materials (60%) and optical device applications (40%), with recent emphasis on ceramic nanomaterials.
