Shauna McMullan is a Lecturer and Researcher in Sculpture & Environmental Art at The Glasgow School of Art's School of Fine Art. Her practice-based research explores landscape, territory, and social engagement through site-specific interventions, walking methodologies, and collaborative public projects across Scotland and international contexts.
McMullan's research centers on environmental art and landscape interpretation, employing peripatetic methods to investigate borders and territoriality as both physical and cultural constructs. Her work critically engages with gender and nationalism in Scottish contexts through feminist art historical frameworks, often manifested in public installations that challenge conventional art spaces and institutional narratives.
Analysis of McMullan's publications reveals a trajectory from early site-specific installations toward structured pedagogical frameworks like the 2023 co-authored book Pedagogy of Place. Recurring themes include displacement, feminist art history, and the politicization of landscape, demonstrating sustained inquiry into how artistic practice mediates human-environment relationships through walking, mapping, and collaborative dialogue.
As a founding collaborator in the Creative Centre for Fluid Territories (CCFT), McMullan co-develops nomadic artistic dialogues addressing displacement. The CCFT network spans institutions including the University of Nicosia and the University of Bergen, facilitating cross-border projects like the 2020 Fluid Territories – nomadic on-line dialogue: Belonging & Displacement and exhibitions at Pollok House and Glasgow Women's Library.
