Shauna Concannon is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science (Digital Humanities) at Durham University. Her research focuses on the societal and ethical implications of emerging technologies, combining computational linguistics with human-centered design principles. She holds a Master's in Modernist Literature from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Computational Linguistics from Queen Mary University of London, followed by postdoctoral research at Cambridge, York, and Newcastle Universities. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding how technologies mediate human communication and knowledge systems.
Shauna’s research interests include:
- Ethical AI Development: Addressing biases in language-based systems and promoting equitable technology design
- Human-Computer Interaction: Studying dialogue systems, empathy in conversational AI, and participatory design methodologies
- Computational Social Science: Analyzing societal impacts of technology through data-driven approaches
- Intersectional Data Science: Applying feminist frameworks to algorithmic fairness and data ethics
Her recent projects explore:

Shauna currently advises four postgraduate students and has collaborated on initiatives like the Brooke Leave Home project, which uses personalized films to enhance public understanding of open data. Her work bridges technical innovation with critical social inquiry, advocating for technology that serves diverse communities responsibly.
