Shaun Hides is a researcher at Coventry University's Faculty of Arts & Humanities, with a focus on material cultures, cultural theory, and disruptive pedagogies in higher education. He holds a PhD in Archaeology and Ethnography from the University of Leicester and has taught at Leeds Metropolitan University (1992) and Coventry University (1997–present).
As Head of the Media Department (2009–2015), he championed open media strategies that elevated the department to the top 15 in the UK. From 2014–2015, he co-directed the £3.4M Disruptive Media Learning Lab (DMLL). Currently, he serves as Deputy Dean and Academic Dean, providing strategic leadership across three schools: Art & Design, Humanities, and Media & Performing Arts.
His research explores the intersection of media, technology, and cultural identity, with a focus on postmaterialism and radical pedagogies. He contributes to the Post-digital Cultures Faculty Research Centre and has secured JISC funding for open media education projects. His publications include two major works on open education and art college reimagination (2013–2014).
Shaun actively participates in university governance as a member of the Charitable and Hardship Fund Board and Academic Board. He has led 28 academic activities, including conference presentations and JISC-funded initiatives, and supervised 4 postgraduate students.
