Shaun Cross, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental, Agricultural, and Occupational Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), part of the College of Public Health. Previously, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University's Institute of Host-Microbe Interactions and Disease. His education includes a PhD in Microbiology from Colorado State University (2020) and a BS in Biology from Brigham Young University-Idaho (2016).
Dr. Cross' research focuses on genomics-based approaches to study microbial pathogens, integrating wet-lab and computational methods. His key areas are: 1) Pathogen surveillance, 2) One Health interdisciplinary studies, and 3) Vector-borne diseases transmitted by arthropods. His work emphasizes novel sequencing technologies for pathogen detection and understanding host-microbe interactions.
His publications span viral pathogenesis (e.g., myocarditis mechanisms), vaccine development (COVID-19), and arthropod virome studies. He actively contributes to professional societies including the American Society for Virology and SACNAS. Teaching philosophy emphasizes active learning and diverse pedagogical methods to accommodate individual learning styles.
