Shashi Kanbur is a Professor in the Physics and Astronomy Department at SUNY Oswego, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He serves as Director of the Astronomy Program and teaches courses ranging from introductory physics/astronomy to advanced topics like cosmology and general relativity. His research focuses on stellar pulsation, cosmology, and the extra-galactic distance scale, with funding from NASA/HST, NSF, and the American Astronomical Society. He collaborates internationally and mentors undergraduates in research projects.
Research Interests:
- Stellar evolution and pulsation mechanisms
- Cosmological distance measurements (e.g., Cepheid variables)
- Applications of mathematical physics to astrophysical systems
- General relativity and quantum mechanics in astrophysical contexts
Grants & Awards:
- Lead or co-investigator on multiple NASA/HST grants
- AAS Chretien International Research Award (Brazilian telescope collaboration)
- Entergy grant for educational planetarium shows
- Dean's Summer Research Grant for RR Lyrae hydrodynamical modeling
He actively involves undergraduates in observational projects and observational data analysis, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration between theorists and observers.
