Sharon Long is a Professor at the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University. She joined the faculty in 1982 and has remained active in research and teaching since returning from her role as Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences (2001-2007). Her research focuses on the symbiosis of nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium bacteria and plant hosts, investigating signals and signal transduction pathways using molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics approaches.
- Bachelor's Degree, California Institute of Technology
- Ph.D., Yale University (Plant Development)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Harvard University (with Fred Ausubel)
Current Teaching Roles:
- BIO 278: Microbiology Literature (Winter)
- BIO 220: Integrative and Experimental Microbiology (Spring)
- BIO 178: Microbiology Literature (Winter)
- BIO 120: Integrative and Experimental Microbiology (Spring)
- 16+ Independent Studies (BIOC 199, BIOC 370, BIOC 399, etc.)
Her work bridges plant biology and microbiology, with implications for agricultural productivity and energy conservation. The lab employs interdisciplinary methods to study plant-microbial interactions at the molecular level.
