Sharon Abramowitz is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. She is affiliated with Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Science and Security, African Studies, and Anthropology programs.
A medical anthropologist, sociologist, and psychiatric epidemiologist, Abramowitz specializes in community engagement, mental health, gender violence, epidemic preparedness, and data sharing in crises. She advocates for integrating social science into public health emergencies and has co-edited works on medical humanitarianism and post-conflict reconstruction in West Africa.
Her research has been published in top-tier journals such as Nature Human Behavior, The Lancet, and Social Science and Medicine, focusing on the West African Ebola outbreak. She leads the Ebola 100 Project, an open-access archive with over 150 interviews from Ebola responders, and founded Communitology, which connects asylum seekers with social science experts.
Trained at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Rutgers University, Abramowitz has served as PI on a Wellcome Trust grant examining data sharing during public health emergencies and collaborates with WHO, UNICEF, Gates Foundation, and USAID to bridge social science, clinical medicine, and epidemiology during epidemics. She also contributes to international working groups, advisory boards, and editorial boards.
