Sharman Perera is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Energy and Nuclear Engineering at Ontario Tech University, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering (2024), M.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (2004), and B.Eng. in Aerospace Engineering (2001), all from Ontario Tech University and Toronto Metropolitan University. His roles include Director of Nuclear Facilities and Manager of the Subcritical Assembly, overseeing critical infrastructure for nuclear education and research.
Research focuses on nuclear facility design, engineering lab development, and innovative teaching methods using virtual reality (VR), CAD/CAE tools, and Monte Carlo simulations. He has pioneered VR-based safety training systems and advanced nuclear instrumentation concepts. Over 20 years of professional experience includes roles as a Radiation and Nuclear Lab Specialist, Mechanical Designer, and CFD Specialist, demonstrating expertise in both academic and industry applications.
Recipient of multiple teaching and service awards, including the 2019 Ontario Tech Teaching Award Nomination and repeated Staff Excellence recognitions. His work bridges nuclear engineering education with practical applications, emphasizing hands-on learning and safety innovation.
Key professional contributions include developing a subcritical assembly facility, automated neutron spectrometers, and geothermal energy educational systems. He advises undergraduate and graduate students on engineering design projects and maintains affiliations with industry partners through experiential learning initiatives.
