Shaobin Miao is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Georgia Regents University, part of the College of Science and Mathematics. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina and completed postdoctoral training at the Georgia Institute of Technology before joining the faculty in 2008.
Research Interests: Dr. Miao's research lies at the intersection of synthetic organic chemistry and functional materials. His work emphasizes the design and synthesis of novel heterocyclic and acene-based compounds with applications in sensing and materials science. Key areas include nitrogen-doped polycyclic aromatic systems, electron-deficient organic semiconductors, and colorimetric anion sensors.
The recent publications show a consistent focus on the development of extended π-conjugated systems such as azaacenes, diazapentacenes, and heteroacene metal complexes, often targeting applications in molecular electronics or chemical detection. His synthetic strategies enable structural control and property tuning in these functional materials.
Service and Teaching: Dr. Miao has served on the Materials Science Research Seminar Committee (2016–2017) and the COSM Pamplin Student Research and Travel Grant Committee (2017). He teaches core undergraduate courses including Organic Chemistry II, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, and undergraduate research courses, actively involving students in hands-on research experiences.
